Eastern Shore Native Vashti Harrison And Actress Lupita Nyong’o Host Book Signing For Upcoming Children’s Book, ‘Sulwe’ in New York

Eastern Shore Native author and illustrator Vashti Harrison hosted a book signing with actress Lupita Nyong’o for their upcoming collaborative children’s book “Sulwe” in New York on May 31.

The book signing was held at the BookExpo Children’s Book and Author Breakfast in Manhattan, NY.

“Sulwe”, which means “star” in Nyong’o’s native language Luo, explores colorism through the eyes of a little girl who’s complexion is darker than everyone else in her family. The story aims to build self-esteem in its young readers as well as emphasize true beauty.

Nyong’o’s story is brought to life visually by New York Times Best Seller Vashti Harrison, who is also known as an author and illustrator for her own children’s book, Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History. Harrison’s magical illustrations paired with Nyong’o’s powerful message is set to make “Sulwe” an impactful project for both women.

The 48-page book, “Sulwe” is targeted mostly for children between the ages of 4-8 and available now for pre-order on Amazon. The official release date for the book is October 1, 2019.
