Artist: Jay Z
Jay Z’s most recent video “Moonlight” from the album 4:44 leaves the hip hop audience as intrigued by the sitcom formatted music video as they are left yearning for understanding.
The video was directed by Alan Yang and features five rising young stars, Jerrod Carmichael, Lil Rel Howery, Issa Rae, Tessa Thompson, Lakeith Stanfield, and Tiffany Haddish as the cast in a modern version of the popular sitcom Friends.
The reoccuring theme in both Jay Z’s song “Moonlight” and the music video is the rapper’s lyrics “even when we win, we gon lose”. This theme derives from the infamous publicized error in the 2016 Oscar Award ceremony where the cast of La la land were announced as winners instead of the true winners (the cast of Moonlight). The situation was the biggest reflection of Jay Z’s theme. Jay Z’s music video also carries the same theme but in the light of an all black casted sitcom of Friends.
Jerod Carmichael’s character realizes that recreating the black version of the whitest show ever made (no offense) doesn’t guarantee success! Knockin off originality is the ultimate lost! After discovering the show isn’t as great as he thinks it is with comedian Hannibal Burgess backstage, Jerod’s character hates everything about the show from that point on. Jerod’s character becomes so lost in his thoughts that he wanders off set (with love interest Issa Rae) to look up at the moon. The infamous Oscar announcement (the cast of ‘La la land’ winning over the cast of ‘Moonlight’) plays at the end to continue the theme that a win on the surface means NOTHING if it’s not genuine!!!!
