Singer Sanura of Virginia Beach, Va
Hailing from VA Beach, VA, Sanura is the epitome of soul. With her individuality and passion for music, there is no telling what the future holds for this R&B singer. Through personal experiences in life and love, Sanura is not only relatable but makes her the new voice for today’s young love.
1. When did you realize you wanted to be a singer? When did you start developing your craft?
I’ve been singing since I was 6. When I was 9, I began writing and putting songs together. At 14, I started getting into the studio recording aspect of it.
2. Do you play any instruments? if so, do you include that aspect in your performances or song writing process?
I do play the piano but lately I’ve been including that more in the production of my songs than the actual live performances. Hopefully soon when I’m more comfortable with my skills I’ll be ableto rock out on the keys onstage!
3. Do you produce in addition to writing?
I actually just started producing on this new project I have out called The Green Room. My producer
Paris Diamond talked me into it and really believed in my ear for it. I wound up co-producing most of the tracks on the album.
4. What is your creative process in the studio for writing a song that you plan to record?
I love for the creative process to happen as naturally as possible. I prefer crafting the whole song as I go rather than just taking a beat and writing to it. My music thrives off my energy and the energy I get
from my producers.
5. Who are your musical influences and how have they made an impact on your craft?
Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige, and Kanye. I admire Bey’s work ethic and professionalism. I love Kanye for his brutal honesty and the fact that he’s a creative perfectionist. And of course Alicia and Mary
virtually embody the art of hip-hop soul. They all inspire me to be the best artist I can be no matter what.
6. Your current album is “The Green Room” which was released April 19th. The album seems to be really personal. What underlying concepts or personal situations have led you to do tracks such as “Hopeless Romantic” and “Seasons”?
It’s been 3 years since I concocted my first project. As we all know, a lot happens in 3 years. Especially when pursuing a career in music. I’ve encountered nothing but valuable learning experiences in both love and life, so the songs on TGR are exact accounts of my steps to self discovery and growth.
7. Who did you work with for “The Green Room”?I didn’t feature any artists on the project but there’s production from the NY based group A Lost People, PointGuard (Hampton), and Montana (DC). One of the tracks, Breathless, was written by Laure Tutson of VA Beach.
8. Your music uses a lot of live instruments creating a jazz yet R&B feel. What genre would you categorize your music? Soul. In every sense of the word.
9. Do you plan to remain an independent artist or would your sign to a record label if given the opportunity?Of course. If the right deal was presented, I would be all in. But until then, I’m all about getting the music to the ears of people who will benefit from it most. I’m all about my supporters.
