Rapper Handles of Eastern Shore, Va, pushes his way to the top while molding his talent into a expressive form to send messages to his audience. With an emphasis on skill, Handles continues to follow his own path by deviating from the use of profanity to concentrate on the true art of lyricism.
1. When did you start rapping? I started rapping at the age of 13.
2. When was the first time you freestyled among your peers? My very first time was when I was at a football game. Me and some of my friends used to always start up a cypher where I was the one doing the beat. Then one of my friends told me to spit, so I did and it kind of brought a big crowd around us.
3. What specific influence at an early age led you to want to pursue a music career? I’ve always had a passion for music. When I was young I used to always write rhymes in my journal but never recited them to anyone until I knew I was ready. I had recorded a few songs in 04′ and passed them out to see what kind of responses I would get. By everyone telling me that I had talent and could see me going far with it, it made me believe in myself to actually pursue it, so basically my family, friends and life in general are my influences.
4. Why do you feel it is important to not use profanity in your songs? I feel it is important because as a artist you must expand your vocabulary. I’m sure it is more ways to express yourself other than using profanity. For example, if I had a song played on the radio filled with profanity, once you take all the profanity out of the song what would you have? Nothing right? I’m just saying why not push yourself to be a better writer and make songs that everyone can listen to instead of making songs that everybody can’t hear such as kids in general
5. How much impact do you feel music has in delivering messages? Music has a lot of impact. Delivering messages through music can relate to a lot of people because they have been through what we have been through in certain situations and such. It gives hope, lessons learned, and confidence that if I can do it, you can do it too.
6. Where did the rap name Handles come from? Handles was first given to me from playing basketball, another talent that I was very good at. But once people started noticing that I had many other talents such as: dancing, rapping, gymnastics, and a few others, people started saying that I could handle anything which made me stick with “Handles” as my stage name.
7. Who are Three Kings Entertainment and what has been their role in your career? Well, I met Three Kings through myspace a few years back and they were feeling some of my songs. I sent them a few songs and they placed them on some mixtapes that they put out every week. They got some good feed back from it. So being they were the first to put me on the mixtape scene, I’ve had the privilege of being placed on mixtapes with artist such as: Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Busta Rhymes and many more.
8. What major record labels have you encountered throughout your career? So far I have been in a few showcases that was sponsored by Def Jam, Atlantic and Slip N Slide Records.
9. What was your first and second mixtape and who did you work with? What type of music did you make for the projects? My first mixtape was titled “Thinking Ahead” hosted by DJ Nice and he also hosted my second mixtape titled “Thinking 2wice Ahead”. It was rated 5 stars on a few websites and they are still available for download so be sure to do so. I have worked with a lot of artists, Carnage45, Josh Everette, Keia Handy, Jigzaw and many more. I’ve made music for everybody, if you looking for club songs, R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, etc, it’s on there. I am very versatile and always finding ways to reach new audiences.
10. What progression do you feel you have made from one mixtape to the next? I have made progress in writing songs, perfecting my delivery and identity to the point where all my fans know that it is me. Although I am still working on making more progressions as I go, I am proud of the type of artist I have become so far.
11. What are you currently working on? Well, I am currently finishing up my first independent album titled “Thinking 2wice Ahead” (basically adding on from the Thinking 2wice Ahead Mixtape) and also I’m working on my third mixtape titled “Thinking More Than Ever” which is the last of the series. So be on the lookout for that, both will be released this Summer 2011.
